Finally after what felt like months, but was really just a few sporadic* weekends, my shoe cabinet is complete! (*Sporadic: does this word not bring back fond memories of mini pleated skirts, thigh high stockings, Mary Janes and "Whatever"? Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy inspired my style in the seventh grade, and Clueless will always have a special place in my heart.) So, back to my cabinet: Although my wonderful husband built this very simple cabinet with dimensions based off of my tallest pair of stilettos in mere hours, it took me days to finish it. Manned with the tool bag of goodies he built for me, I managed to sand, stain, sand, stain, sand, lacquer, sand (um... sanding lacquer takes only a very light grain of sand paper and a light touch, or else you risk some serious grooves...) stain(!)(Again, after using a sander over the lacquer...)(Tears, just a few) and one last coat of lacquer, and finally, finally, I finished the cabinet. Clearly finishing furniture is not my forte, but thankfully I managed with just a few tears shed (as noted above.)
Oh, the utter excitement! On a beautiful Friday morning (after my weekly coffee date with the girls), my best friend K helped me haul this baby up the stairs (don't be alarmed, there are only 3 stairs) and into the new corner that would be it's home. No more boxes of shoes stacked in the corner, or hidden away and forgotten about, my shoes now have a home. And above the glorious shelves now hangs my beautiful Arturo Elena. Although one day I hope to have my very own dream closet, today I am unbelievably happy with this!
